Research News and Information

Definition of 'Prefrontal Cortex'

The rostral part of the frontal lobe, bounded by the inferior precentral fissure in humans, which receives projection fibers from the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus. The prefrontal cortex receives afferent fibers from numerous structures of the diencephalon, mesencephalon, and limbic system as well as cortical afferents of visual, auditory, and somatic origin.

Common names: Prefrontal Cortex; Cortex, Prefrontal

Altered corticostriatal functional connectivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

30 Oct 2009 CONTEXT: Neurobiological models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) emphasize disturbances in the function and connectivity of brain corticostriatal networks, or "loops." Although neuroimaging studies of patients have supported this network model ... Read more...

Altered effect of dopamine transporter 3'UTR VNTR genotype on prefrontal and striatal function in schizophrenia.

30 Oct 2009 CONTEXT: The dopamine transporter plays a key role in the regulation of central dopaminergic transmission, which modulates cognitive processing. Disrupted dopamine function and impaired executive processing are robust features of schizophrenia. ... Read more...

Formation of spatial memory in rats with ischemic lesions to the prefrontal cortex; effects of a synthetic analog of ACTH(4-7).

21 Sep 2009 Photochemically induced thrombosis of blood vessels in the prefrontal cortex in rats was shown to lead to ischemic infarcts in the lesion zone. Bilateral ischemic lesioning of the prefrontal cortex degraded measures of spatial memory when animals ... Read more...
