Pseudogenes
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Pseudogenes'

Genes bearing close resemblance to known genes at different loci, but rendered non-functional by additions or deletions in structure that prevent normal transcription or translation. When lacking introns and containing a poly-A segment near the downstream end (as a result of reverse copying from processed nuclear RNA into double-stranded DNA), they are called processed genes.

Common names: Pseudogenes; Pseudogene; Genes, Processed; Gene, Processed; Processed Gene; Processed Genes; beta-Tubulin Pseudogene; Pseudogene, beta-Tubulin; Pseudogenes, beta-Tubulin; beta Tubulin Pseudogene; beta-Tubulin Pseudogenes

Comprehensive analysis of the pseudogenes of glycolytic enzymes in vertebrates: the anomalously high number of GAPDH pseudogenes highlights a recent burst of retrotrans-positional activity.

14 Oct 2009 BACKGROUND: Pseudogenes provide a record of the molecular evolution of genes. As glycolysis is such a highly conserved and fundamental metabolic pathway, the pseudogenes of glycolytic enzymes comprise a standardized genomic measuring stick and an ... Read more...

A comparison of reptilian and avian olfactory receptor gene repertoires: species-specific expansion of group gamma genes in birds.

19 Sep 2009 BACKGROUND: The detection of odorants is mediated by olfactory receptors (ORs). ORs are G-protein coupled receptors that form a remarkably large protein superfamily in vertebrate genomes. We used data that became available through recent sequencing ... Read more...

Assessing the genomic evidence for conserved transcribed pseudogenes under selection.

13 Sep 2009 BACKGROUND: Transcribed pseudogenes are copies of protein-coding genes that have accumulated indicators of coding-sequence decay (such as frameshifts and premature stop codons), but nonetheless remain transcribed. Recent experimental evidence ... Read more...
