Reactive Oxygen Species - Metabolism
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Reactive Oxygen Species'

Molecules or ions formed by the incomplete one-electron reduction of oxygen. These reactive oxygen intermediates include SINGLET OXYGEN; SUPEROXIDES; PEROXIDES; HYDROXYL RADICAL; and HYPOCHLOROUS ACID. They contribute to the microbicidal activity of PHAGOCYTES, regulation of signal transduction and gene expression, and the oxidative damage to NUCLEIC ACIDS; PROTEINS; and LIPIDS.

Common names: Reactive Oxygen Species; Oxygen Species, Reactive; Active Oxygen; Oxygen, Active; Oxygen Radicals; Pro-Oxidants; Pro Oxidants

Oxidized low density lipoprotein decreases Rankl-induced differentiation of osteoclasts by inhibition of Rankl signaling.

29 Nov 2009 The role of OxLDL in the generation and progression of atherosclerosis is well admitted. In addition, it is well known that atherosclerosis is often accompanied by perturbations in bone remodeling, resulting in osteoporosis. In the current studies, ... Read more...

Membrane-dependent bystander effect contributes to amplification of the response to alpha-particle irradiation in targeted and nontargeted cells.

13 Nov 2009 PURPOSE: Free radicals are believed to play an active role in the bystander response. This study investigated their origin as well as their temporal and spatial impacts in the bystander effect. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We employed a precise ... Read more...

Clinical implication of urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and kidney injury molecule-1 in patients with acute paraquat intoxication.

30 Oct 2009 BACKGROUND: Paraquat (PQ)-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) might show the role for reactive oxygen species (ROS) in AKI. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of early urinary biomarkers in patients with acute PQ ... Read more...
