Definition of 'Receptors, Adrenergic, alpha-2'

A subclass of alpha-adrenergic receptors (RECEPTORS, ADRENERGIC, ALPHA). alpha-2 Adrenergic receptors can be pharmacologically discriminated, e.g., by their high affinity for the agonist clonidine and the antagonist yohimbine. They are found on pancreatic beta cells, platelets, and VASCULAR SMOOTH MUSCLE, as well as both pre- and postsynaptically in the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Common names: Receptors, Adrenergic, alpha-2; Adrenergic Receptor, alpha-2; Adrenergic Receptor, alpha 2; Receptor, alpha-2 Adrenergic; alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptor; Receptors, alpha-2 Adrenergic; Receptors, alpha 2 Adrenergic; alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptors; Adrenergic Receptors, alpha-2

Protein kinase C mediates the synergistic interaction between agonists acting at alpha2-adrenergic and delta-opioid receptors in spinal cord.

19 Oct 2009 Coactivation of spinal alpha(2)-adrenergic receptors (ARs) and opioid receptors produces antinociceptive synergy. Antinociceptive synergy between intrathecally administered alpha(2)AR and opioid agonists is well documented, but the mechanism ... Read more...

Insertion/deletion polymorphism in alpha2-adrenergic receptor gene is a genetic risk factor for sudden cardiac death.

29 Sep 2009 BACKGROUND: Adrenoceptors mediate contraction of vascular smooth muscle and induce coronary vasoconstriction in humans. A deletion variant of the human alpha(2B)-adrenoreseptor of glutamic acid residues has been associated with impaired receptor ... Read more...

Noradrenergic modulation of neuronal responses to glutamate in the vestibular complex.

18 Aug 2009 Increases in firing rate induced in secondary vestibular neurons by microiontophoretic application of glutamate were studied during long-lasting applications of noradrenaline (NA) and/or its antagonists and agonists. Sixty-nine percent of the tested ... Read more...
