Receptors, Cholinergic - Metabolism
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Receptors, Cholinergic'

Cell surface proteins that bind acetylcholine with high affinity and trigger intracellular changes influencing the behavior of cells. Cholinergic receptors are divided into two major classes, muscarinic and nicotinic, based originally on their affinity for nicotine and muscarine. Each group is further subdivided based on pharmacology, location, mode of action, and/or molecular biology.

Common names: Receptors, Cholinergic; Receptors, Acetylcholine; Cholinoceptive Sites; Sites, Cholinoceptive; Receptors, ACh; Cholinergic Receptors; ACh Receptors; Acetylcholine Receptors; Cholinoceptors

Alterations in cholinergic sensitivity of respiratory neurons induced by pre-natal nicotine: a mechanism for respiratory dysfunction in neonatal mice.

10 Sep 2009 Nicotine may link cigarette smoking during pregnancy with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Pre-natal nicotine leads to diminished ventilatory responses to hypercarbia and reduced central chemoreception in mice at post-natal days 0-3. We studied ... Read more...

Boosting cholinergic activity in gustatory cortex enhances the salience of a familiar conditioned stimulus in taste aversion learning.

30 Jul 2009 The cholinergic system is important for learning, memory, and responses to novel stimuli. Exposure to novel, but not familiar, tastes increases extracellular acetylcholine (ACh) levels in insular cortex (IC). To further examine whether cholinergic ... Read more...

Acetylcholine receptor pathway and lung cancer.

30 Jul 2009 Genome-wide association studies revealed chromosome regions 15q24-25 were associated with a higher risk for development of lung cancer. The 15q24-25 region encompasses the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit genes (nAchR alpha3, alpha5, and ... Read more...
