Receptors, Glucocorticoid - Genetics
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Receptors, Glucocorticoid'

Cytoplasmic proteins that specifically bind glucocorticoids and mediate their cellular effects. The glucocorticoid receptor-glucocorticoid complex acts in the nucleus to induce transcription of DNA. Glucocorticoids were named for their actions on blood glucose concentration, but they have equally important effects on protein and fat metabolism. Cortisol is the most important example.

An epistatic ratchet constrains the direction of glucocorticoid receptor evolution.

22 Sep 2009 The extent to which evolution is reversible has long fascinated biologists. Most previous work on the reversibility of morphological and life-history evolution has been indecisive, because of uncertainty and bias in the methods used to infer ... Read more...

Corticosterone reduces dendritic complexity in developing hippocampal CA1 neurons.

30 Aug 2009 Although prolonged stress and corticosteroid exposure induce morphological changes in the hippocampal CA3 area, the adult CA1 area is quite resistant to such changes. Here we addressed the question whether elevated corticosteroid hormone levels ... Read more...

Vulnerability to depression: what is the role of stress genes in gene x environment interaction?

30 Aug 2009 Vulnerability to depression has been linked to the interaction of genetic predisposition with stressful life events. This review considers the associations between serotonergic and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) systems. We follow the ... Read more...
