Definition of 'Renin'

A highly specific (Leu-Leu) endopeptidase that generates ANGIOTENSIN I from its precursor ANGIOTENSINOGEN, leading to a cascade of reactions which elevate BLOOD PRESSURE and increase sodium retention by the kidney in the RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN SYSTEM. The enzyme was formerly listed as EC 3.4.99.19.

Common names: Renin; Angiotensinogenase; Angiotensin-Forming Enzyme; Angiotensin Forming Enzyme; Prorenin; Cryorenin; Inactive Renin; Renin, Inactive; Big Renin; Renin, Big; Preprorenin; Pre-Prorenin; Pre Prorenin

Time-dependent effects of low-dose aspirin on plasma renin activity, aldosterone, cortisol, and catecholamines.

3 Oct 2009 Studies have shown that aspirin may decrease blood pressure when given at bedtime but not when administered on awakening. However, until now, a biologically plausible mechanism of this striking phenomenon was not revealed. We investigated the effect ... Read more...

[Hypertension in diabetes mellitus]

25 Sep 2009 Hypertension can be detected very often in patients with diabetes mellitus. In some cases, hypertension develops as a consequence of diabetic nephropathy. Although diabetic nephropathy may occur both in type 1 and in type 2 diabetes, some ... Read more...

Angiotensin-(1-7), an alternative metabolite of the renin-angiotensin system, is up-regulated in human liver disease and has antifibrotic activity in the bile-duct-ligated rat.

12 Sep 2009 Ang-(1-7) (angiotensin-1-7), a peptide product of the recently described ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) homologue ACE2, opposes the harmful actions of AngII (angiotensin II) in cardiovascular tissues, but its role in liver disease is unknown. ... Read more...
