Definition of 'Retina'

The ten-layered nervous tissue membrane of the eye. It is continuous with the OPTIC NERVE and receives images of external objects and transmits visual impulses to the brain. Its outer surface is in contact with the CHOROID and the inner surface with the VITREOUS BODY. The outer-most layer is pigmented, whereas the inner nine layers are transparent.

Common names: Retina; Retinas

Retinotopic mapping requires focal adhesion kinase-mediated regulation of growth cone adhesion.

2 Nov 2009 Adhesion controls growth cone motility, yet the effects of axon guidance cues on adhesion site dynamics are poorly understood. Here we show that ephrin-A1 reduces retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon outgrowth by stabilizing existing adhesions and ... Read more...

Go with the flow -- but only in one direction.

27 Oct 2009 Retinotopic maps form prior to the development of vision, when retinal waves serve as a robust source of correlated neural activity. Two recent studies provide critical insights into the features of retinal waves that may be instructive for the ... Read more...

Input-specific intrasynaptic arrangements of ionotropic glutamate receptors and their impact on postsynaptic responses.

12 Oct 2009 To examine the intrasynaptic arrangement of postsynaptic receptors in relation to the functional role of the synapse, we quantitatively analyzed the two-dimensional distribution of AMPA and NMDA receptors (AMPARs and NMDARs, respectively) using ... Read more...
