Retinal Rod Photoreceptor Cells - Physiology
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Retinal Rod Photoreceptor Cells'Photosensitive afferent neurons located in the peripheral retina, with density increases radially away from the FOVEA CENTRALIS. Being much more sensitive to light than the RETINAL CONE CELLS, the rod cells are responsible for twilight vision (at scotopic intensities) as well as peripheral vision, but provide no color discrimination. Common names: Retinal Rod Photoreceptor Cells; Retinal Rod Cells; Cell, Retinal Rod; Cells, Retinal Rod; Rod Cell, Retinal; Rod Cells, Retinal; Retinal Rod Photoreceptors; Photoreceptor, Retinal Rod; Photoreceptors, Retinal Rod; Retinal Rod Photoreceptor; Rod Photoreceptor, Retinal; Rod Photoreceptors, Retinal |

Specificity of the horizontal cell-photoreceptor connections in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) retina.
8 Oct 2009
Horizontal cells (HCs) are involved in establishing the center-surround receptive field organization of photoreceptor and bipolar cells. In many species, HCs respond differentially to colors and may play a role in color vision. An earlier study from ... Read more...

Reliable signal transduction via G-protein-coupled receptors requires proper receptor inactivation. For example, signals originating from single rhodopsin molecules vary little from one to the next, requiring reproducible inactivation of rhodopsin ... Read more...

Small bistratified cells (SBCs) in the primate retina carry a major blue-yellow opponent signal to the brain. We found that SBCs also carry signals from rod photoreceptors, with the same sign as S cone input. SBCs exhibited robust responses under ... Read more...
