Retinal Rod Photoreceptor Cells
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Retinal Rod Photoreceptor Cells'

Photosensitive afferent neurons located in the peripheral retina, with density increases radially away from the FOVEA CENTRALIS. Being much more sensitive to light than the RETINAL CONE CELLS, the rod cells are responsible for twilight vision (at scotopic intensities) as well as peripheral vision, but provide no color discrimination.

Rbpj cell autonomous regulation of retinal ganglion cell and cone photoreceptor fates in the mouse retina.

12 Oct 2009 Vertebrate retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) are pluripotent, but pass through competence states that progressively restrict their developmental potential (Cepko et al., 1996; Livesey and Cepko, 2001; Cayouette et al., 2006). In the rodent eye, seven ... Read more...

8 Oct 2009 Horizontal cells (HCs) are involved in establishing the center-surround receptive field organization of photoreceptor and bipolar cells. In many species, HCs respond differentially to colors and may play a role in color vision. An earlier study from ... Read more...

Retinoid-related orphan nuclear receptor RORbeta is an early-acting factor in rod photoreceptor development.

22 Sep 2009 Rods and cones are morphologically and developmentally distinct photoreceptor types with different functions in vision. Cones mediate daylight and color vision and in most mammals express M and S opsin photopigments for sensitivity to medium-long ... Read more...
