Definition of 'Sodium'

An element that is a member of the alkali group of metals. It has the atomic symbol Na, atomic number 11, and atomic weight 23. With a valence of 1, it has a strong affinity for oxygen and other nonmetallic elements. Sodium provides the chief cation of the extracellular body fluids. Its salts are the most widely used in medicine. (From Dorland, 27th ed) Physiologically the sodium ion plays a major role in blood pressure regulation, maintenance of fluid volume, and electrolyte balance.

Effects of high-K(+), Na(+)-deficient solution on contractility of the smooth muscles of the porcine trachea.

30 Aug 2009 A high-K(+), Na(+)-deficient (isosmotic 154 mM K(+) and 0 mM Na(+); I-154 K(+)) solution induced contraction followed by gradual relaxation of the smooth muscles of the porcine trachea, while hyperosmotic addition of 65 mM KCl (H-65 K(+)) induced a ... Read more...

To switch or not to switch: the effects of potassium and sodium ions on alpha-poly-L-glutamate conformations in aqueous solutions.

10 Aug 2009 Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that differences in the interaction of sodium and potassium with the carboxylate side chains of alpha-poly-L-glutamate (alpha-PGA) have a dramatic effect on the conformational properties of the polypeptide. ... Read more...

The equivalent of a thallium binding residue from an archeal homolog controls cation interactions in brain glutamate transporters.

9 Aug 2009 Glutamate transporters maintain low synaptic concentrations of neurotransmitter by coupling uptake to flux of other ions. Their transport cycle consists of two separate translocation steps, namely cotransport of glutamic acid with three Na(+) ... Read more...
