Status Epilepticus - Complications
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Status Epilepticus'A prolonged seizure or seizures repeated frequently enough to prevent recovery between episodes occurring over a period of 20-30 minutes. The most common subtype is generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus, a potentially fatal condition associated with neuronal injury and respiratory and metabolic dysfunction. Nonconvulsive forms include petit mal status and complex partial status, which may manifest as behavioral disturbances. Simple partial status epilepticus consists of persistent motor, sensory, or autonomic seizures that do not impair cognition (see also EPILEPSIA PARTIALIS CONTINUA). Subclinical status epilepticus generally refers to seizures occurring in an unresponsive or comatose individual in the absence of overt signs of seizure activity. Uncoupling of astrogliosis from epileptogenesis in adenosine kinase (ADK) transgenic mice.
11 Aug 2009
The astrocytic enzyme adenosine kinase (ADK) is a key negative regulator of the brain's endogenous anticonvulsant adenosine. Astrogliosis with concomitant upregulation of ADK is part of the epileptogenic cascade and contributes to seizure ... Read more...
Development of epileptiform excitability in the deep entorhinal cortex after status epilepticus.
8 Aug 2009
Epileptiform neuronal activity during seizures is observed in many brain areas, but its origins following status epilepticus (SE) are unclear. We have used the Li low-dose pilocarpine rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy to examine early development ... Read more...
A case of Rasmussen encephalitis treated with rituximab.
30 Jul 2009
BACKGROUND: A 20-year-old woman was referred to our intensive care unit with a high frequency (every 1-2 min) of focal motor seizures. She had been diagnosed as having biopsy-proven Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) of the right hemisphere 7 years ... Read more...
