Research News and Information

Definition of 'Superoxide Dismutase'

An oxidoreductase that catalyzes the reaction between superoxide anions and hydrogen to yield molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The enzyme protects the cell against dangerous levels of superoxide. EC 1.15.1.1.

Common names: Superoxide Dismutase; Dismutase, Superoxide; Erythrocuprein; Hemocuprein; Ag-Zn Superoxide Dismutase; Ag Zn Superoxide Dismutase; Dismutase, Ag-Zn Superoxide; Superoxide Dismutase, Ag-Zn; Cu-Zn Superoxide Dismutase; Cu Zn Superoxide Dismutase; Dismutase, Cu-Zn Superoxide

p38SJ, a novel DINGG protein protects neuronal cells from alcohol induced injury and death.

29 Nov 2009 Ethanol induces neuronal cell injury and death by dysregulating several signaling events that are controlled, in part, by activation of MAPK/ERK1/2 and/or inactivation of its corresponding phosphatase, PP1. Recently, we have purified a novel protein ... Read more...

Protective effect of sulfhydryl-containing antioxidants against ischemia/reperfusion injury of prepubertal rat intestine.

29 Nov 2009 BACKGROUND AND AIM: Reactive oxygen species generated during reperfusion of the tissue are known to play an important role in the basic pathophysiology of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the ... Read more...

Reticulon-4A (Nogo-A) redistributes protein disulfide isomerase to protect mice from SOD1-dependent amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

2 Nov 2009 Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal motor neuron disease inherited in a small subset of patients. The SOD1(G93A) transgenic mouse models this subset of patients, and studies of this strain have suggested that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) ... Read more...
