Research News and Information

Definition of 'Thyrotropin'

A glycoprotein hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). Thyrotropin stimulates THYROID GLAND by increasing the iodide transport, synthesis and release of thyroid hormones (THYROXINE and TRIIODOTHYRONINE). Thyrotropin consists of two noncovalently linked subunits, alpha and beta. Within a species, the alpha subunit is common in the pituitary glycoprotein hormones (TSH; LUTEINIZING HORMONE and FSH), but the beta subunit is unique and confers its biological specificity.

Comparison of the spatial distribution of seven types of neuroendocrine neurons in the rat paraventricular nucleus: toward a global 3D model.

8 Oct 2009 The paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) coordinates neuroendocrine, autonomic, and behavioral responses to help maintain energy and body water balance. The rat paraventricular nucleus has three major divisions: descending with axonal ... Read more...

A 30-year perspective on radioiodine therapy of benign nontoxic multinodular goiter.

29 Sep 2009 PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is no consensus on the ideal treatment of patients with a benign nontoxic multinodular goiter. In some European countries, (131)I therapy has replaced surgery as the treatment of choice in these patients. Recombinant human ... Read more...

Functional capacity and muscular abnormalities in subclinical hypothyroidism.

29 Sep 2009 BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular abnormalities and low exercise tolerance are frequently observed in overt hypothyroidism, but it remains controversial if they can also occur in subclinical hypothyroidism (sHT). The aim of this study is to evaluate ... Read more...
