Definition of 'Thyroxine'

The major hormone derived from the thyroid gland. Thyroxine is synthesized via the iodination of tyrosines (MONOIODOTYROSINE) and the coupling of iodotyrosines (DIIODOTYROSINE) in the THYROGLOBULIN. Thyroxine is released from thyroglobulin by proteolysis and secreted into the blood. Thyroxine is peripherally deiodinated to form TRIIODOTHYRONINE which exerts a broad spectrum of stimulatory effects on cell metabolism.

Type 1 deiodinase activity and generation of triiodothyronine (T3) in prostate of sexually active rats.

30 Oct 2009 BACKGROUND: Thyroxine (T(4)) and triiodothyronine (T(3)) are involved in the development and function of the male reproductive system. The type 1 deiodinase enzyme (D1) plays a major role in the intracellular conversion of T(4) to the active form, ... Read more...

The influence of thyroid hormones on periodontitis-related bone loss and tooth-supporting alveolar bone: a histological study in rats.

20 Oct 2009 BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have pointed to potentially periodontal risk indicators, however no information is available on the impact of changes in thyroid hormone levels on the progression of periodontitis and on the quality of ... Read more...

The blood-brain barrier thyroxine transporter organic anion-transporting polypeptide 1c1 displays atypical transport kinetics.

7 Oct 2009 Organic anion-transporting polypeptide (Oatp) 1c1 is a high-affinity T(4) transporter expressed in brain barrier cells. Oatp1c1 transports a variety of additional ligands including the conjugated sterol estradiol 17beta-glucuronide (E(2)17betaG). ... Read more...
