Total Lung Capacity
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Total Lung Capacity'The volume of air contained in the lungs at the end of a maximal inspiration. It is the equivalent to each of the following sums: VITAL CAPACITY plus RESIDUAL VOLUME; INSPIRATORY CAPACITY plus FUNCTIONAL RESIDUAL CAPACITY; TIDAL VOLUME plus INSPIRATORY RESERVE VOLUME plus functional residual capacity; or tidal volume plus inspiratory reserve volume plus EXPIRATORY RESERVE VOLUME plus residual volume. |

FRC measurements using body plethysmography in young children.
30 Aug 2009
BACKGROUND: Measurement of FRC in whole body plethysmography (FRCpleth) is not performed in young children (aged 3-5 years) because it involves sitting alone in a closed box and breathing attempts against occlusion. OBJECTIVE: To assess the ... Read more...

The explanation for prone and supine differences in tissue density and pleural pressure gradients in the healthy lung has been inferred from several studies as compression of dependent tissue by the heart in the supine posture; however, this ... Read more...
