Tourette Syndrome
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Tourette Syndrome'A neuropsychological disorder related to alterations in DOPAMINE metabolism and neurotransmission involving frontal-subcortical neuronal circuits. Both multiple motor and one or more vocal tics need to be present with TICS occurring many times a day, nearly daily, over a period of more than one year. The onset is before age 18 and the disturbance is not due to direct physiological effects of a substance or a general medical condition. The disturbance causes marked distress or significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. (From DSM-IV, 1994; Neurol Clin 1997 May;15(2):357-79) |

Association of intronic variants of the BTBD9 gene with Tourette syndrome.
29 Sep 2009
OBJECTIVE: To test the association between Tourette syndrome (TS) and genetic variants in genomic loci MEIS1, MAP2K5/LBXCOR1, and BTBD9, for which genome-wide association studies in restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movements during sleep ... Read more...
Streptococcal infection, Tourette syndrome, and OCD: is there a connection?
28 Sep 2009
BACKGROUND: A causal relationship of common streptococcal infections and childhood neuropsychiatric disorders has been postulated. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis of an increased rate of streptococcal infections preceding the onset of ... Read more...
Predictors of early adult outcomes in pediatric-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder.
26 Sep 2009
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the childhood clinical predictors of early adult outcomes in pediatric-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to assess whether dimensional subtypes of OCD and the presence of comorbid tic ... Read more...
