Transforming Growth Factor beta - Metabolism
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Transforming Growth Factor beta'

A factor synthesized in a wide variety of tissues. It acts synergistically with TGF-alpha in inducing phenotypic transformation and can also act as a negative autocrine growth factor. TGF-beta has a potential role in embryonal development, cellular differentiation, hormone secretion, and immune function. TGF-beta is found mostly as homodimer forms of separate gene products TGF-beta1, TGF-beta2 or TGF-beta3. Heterodimers composed of TGF-beta1 and 2 (TGF-beta1.2) or of TGF-beta2 and 3 (TGF-beta2.3) have been isolated. The TGF-beta proteins are synthesized as precursor proteins.

Smad4: gatekeeper gene in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

17 Oct 2009 Unchecked cell growth is a hallmark of cancer. During oncogenesis, cancerous cells become resistant to the TGF-beta signaling pathway that usually keeps cell growth in check. The role of a critical mediator of this pathway, Smad4, in head and neck ... Read more...

Localized and reversible TGFbeta signalling switches breast cancer cells from cohesive to single cell motility.

16 Oct 2009 Here we use intravital imaging to demonstrate a reversible transition to a motile state as breast cancer cells spread. Imaging primary tumours revealed heterogeneity in cell morphology and motility. Two distinct modes of motility were observed: ... Read more...

Acquisition of T regulatory function in cathepsin L-inhibited T cells by eye-derived CTLA-2alpha during inflammatory conditions.

13 Oct 2009 Pigment epithelium isolated from the eye possesses immunosuppressive properties such as regulatory T (Treg) cell induction; e.g., cultured retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) converts CD4(+) T cells into Treg cells in vitro. RPE constitutively ... Read more...
