Definition of 'Transforming Growth Factor beta'

A factor synthesized in a wide variety of tissues. It acts synergistically with TGF-alpha in inducing phenotypic transformation and can also act as a negative autocrine growth factor. TGF-beta has a potential role in embryonal development, cellular differentiation, hormone secretion, and immune function. TGF-beta is found mostly as homodimer forms of separate gene products TGF-beta1, TGF-beta2 or TGF-beta3. Heterodimers composed of TGF-beta1 and 2 (TGF-beta1.2) or of TGF-beta2 and 3 (TGF-beta2.3) have been isolated. The TGF-beta proteins are synthesized as precursor proteins.

Requirement of a dynein light chain in TGFbeta/Smad3 signaling.

29 Nov 2009 We have previously reported that the dynein light chain (DLC) km23-1 is required for Smad2-dependent TGFbeta signaling. Here we describe another member of the km23/DYNLRB/LC7/robl family of DLCs, termed km23-2, which is also involved in TGFbeta ... Read more...

Increased expression of IL-33 in severe asthma: evidence of expression by airway smooth muscle cells.

13 Oct 2009 IL-33, a new member of the IL-1 cytokine family, promotes Th2 inflammation, but evidence on the implications of this cytokine in asthma is lacking. IL-33 would be mainly expressed by structural cells, but whether proinflammatory cytokines modulate ... Read more...

Allogeneic induced human FOXP3(+)IFN-gamma(+) T cells exhibit selective suppressive capacity.

29 Sep 2009 Human induced CD4(+)CD25(+) T cells have been shown to express FOXP3, similar to naturally occurring Treg cells (nTreg). However, the suppressive capacity of these cells is still under debate. The current study was designed to investigate functional ... Read more...
