Triiodothyronine
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Triiodothyronine'A T3 thyroid hormone normally synthesized and secreted by the thyroid gland in much smaller quantities than thyroxine (T4). Most T3 is derived from peripheral monodeiodination of T4 at the 5' position of the outer ring of the iodothyronine nucleus. The hormone finally delivered and used by the tissues is mainly T3. Common names: Triiodothyronine; T3 Thyroid Hormone; Thyroid Hormone, T3; Liothyronine; Cytomel |

BACKGROUND: Thyroxine (T(4)) and triiodothyronine (T(3)) are involved in the development and function of the male reproductive system. The type 1 deiodinase enzyme (D1) plays a major role in the intracellular conversion of T(4) to the active form, ... Read more...

The type 3 iodothyronine deiodinase (D3) is the primary deiodinase that inactivates thyroid hormone. Immunoprecipitation of D3, followed by fluorescent two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, identified peroxiredoxin 3 ... Read more...
