Definition of 'Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A'

The original member of the family of endothelial cell growth factors referred to as VASCULAR ENDOTHELIAL GROWTH FACTORS. Vascular endothelial growth factor-A was originally isolated from tumor cells and referred to as "tumor angiogenesis factor" and "vascular permeability factor". Although expressed at high levels in certain tumor-derived cells it is produced by a wide variety of cell types. In addition to stimulating vascular growth and vascular permeability it may play a role in stimulating VASODILATION via NITRIC OXIDE-dependent pathways. Alternative splicing of the mRNA for vascular endothelial growth factor A results in several isoforms of the protein being produced.

Prognostic value of proangiogenic cytokines in children with lymphomas.

13 Dec 2009 BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis and proangiogenic cytokines are involved in neoplastic development. The role of these processes in lymphoma formation has not been established. The aim of the study was to assess angiogenesis on the basis of serum levels of ... Read more...

VEGF expression as a prognostic marker in osteosarcoma.

29 Nov 2009 BACKGROUND: The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway is the key regulator of angiogenesis. In osteosarcoma baseline VEGF is of proven prognostic value but prognostic potential of post-NACT VEGF expression is largely unexplored. ... Read more...

Bevacizumab as therapy for radiation necrosis in four children with pontine gliomas.

13 Nov 2009 PURPOSE: Diffuse pontine gliomas are a pediatric brain tumor that is fatal in nearly all patients. Given the poor prognosis for patients with this tumor, their quality of life is very important. Radiation therapy provides some palliation, but can ... Read more...
