[Reduced intelligence in childhood and adolescents]
(Intelligenzminderung ist nicht automatisch Behinderung. Zufrieden leben im Rahmen der eigenen Möglichkeiten.)
Full Abstract
Intellectual impairment is a complex affair involving an interaction between an individual functional disorder (reduced intelligence) and (limited) opportunities for activity and participation in social life. The prevalence of mental impairment is about 2-3%. The diagnosis of reduced intelligence must emphatically be an interdisciplinary effort (medical, psychological, pedagogic), and requires specialist training and experience. The aim of the diagnostic work-up must be to create the necessary conditions for optimal development and furtherance of the child within the context of functional family relations.
