Questions and Answers
Do you provide the full article body?
We only article summaries on this website. We do however provide links to publisher sites, and we make it easy for you to find articles that have free full text!
Can you provide me with a specific article if I ask? Just one?
Unfortunately no. All the information we have available we publish on the website.
How do I find the full text of articles?
All of the articles have links to the publisher websites. To see these, go to the "Journal and Publication Information" in the article summary page and click the "links" link.
Note that many article publishers require you have a subscription to the journal or their article service. Some will provide individual articles however at a cost.
How can I find FREE full text articles?
The easiest way we find is to use article map search. You can then see 100 articles at once, and any free articles are immediately obvious as the fully green icons.
To use the article map search, go to the search page then click the option that says "Show search results as a visual map" near the top. You can also click the link below any smaller article map that says "See a large map of 100+ related articles."
In some cases, you may be able to find the full text of articles published online using our Google Search function. Go to the "Journal and Publication Information" and click the "links" link. At the bottom of the page you'll see a pre-populated query that you can easily submit to Google. You can then view the results to see if any provide the full text for free.
What advanced searching features are available?
When using the advanced search option on the search form, the following search features are available:
- Use AND, OR and NOT between words, eg diabetes AND NOT heart disease will match articles with diabetes but not heart disease in the article.
- Use w/ to specify that the second word should appear within a set number of words of the first, eg diabetes w/5 insulin will find articles in which insulin is within 5 words from diabetes.
- Use () to separate search groups, eg (diabetes or hyperglycemia) AND (treatment or therapy)
- Use CONTAINS to search specific fields, eg TITLE CONTAINS diabetes
- Specific fields available are: TITLE, ABSTRACT, AUTHORS and JOURNAL
- You can join CONTAINS together using (), eg (TITLE CONTAINS diabetes) and ((JOURNAL contains diabetic medicine ) OR (authors CONTAINS Campbell))
- Search is case insensitive. You can use upper or lower case for all these operators.
What is the article map?
The article map is one of our innovative features to help you find the articles you need quickly and efficiently. It is available on most article summary pages as well as through the search function. It looks like this:

The most recent articles appear towards the right, whereas older articles appear on the left. More relevant articles are towards the top, and less relevant articles are towards the bottom.
You can see that the icons make it easy to see the articles which have free full text! See icon descriptions.
What are the green boxes after article links and on the article map?
The icons indicate whether the full text is available free, or whether the abstract is provided. Here's what they mean:
|
|
FREE Full text Article. This fully green box means you can access the full text of the article at no cost. Click the link then go to the "Journal and Publication Information" and click the "links" link. |
|
|
Abstract only. Generally the full text generally is not available for free. |
| |
Title only. No abstract or free full text is available. |
I saw an ad I do not think is appropriate - what can I do?
Please contact us with a full description of the ad, in particular the URL. We'll see if we can remove it.
How do I see more search results?
See the products page.
I am an author and I want to add or update my article. How do I do this?
We do not have an article submission service. You should contact a journal publisher in your line of research.
For updates, please contact your original journal publisher. They need to update their records in MEDLINE. We will then capture the updates over time. It may take a while for updates to appear.
I have a suggestion. How do I submit it for consideration?
We'd very much like to hear from you. Please contact us.
